Supporting older patients in adhering to therapy
Client
Danone/Nutricia
My role
As a researcher I visited patients and their caretakers at home for in-depth interviews. Together with three other researchers we executed the analysis and presented the results to the client during an immersion workshop.
Research methods
- Expert Interviews
- Ethnographic field study
- Prototyping
- Journey mapping
- Empathy Mapping
- Fundamental Needs

Challenge
Adherence to therapy is a patient's willing and permanent adherence to the treatment prescribed by a doctor. Failure to follow treatment is a problem of unprecedented magnitude for the patient, as it leads to an increased risk of complications, morbidity and mortality, and for the health care system, as it leads to higher costs. Each patient has his own reasons for non-compliance with therapy - a complex issue that requires a holistic view. Danone/Nutricia asked us to map the reasons for non-compliance in relation to oral nutritional supplements.
Synthesis
Based on our research findings and literature on behavioral change, we have developed a framework showing the ten different factors that always play a role. Motivation is a central factor: Ultimately, the patient must really want to follow the therapy themselves.

We translated the gathered evidence into a patient journey and insight statements. Videos enabled us during the presentation to convey the consumer’s voice. During a half-day workshop opportunity areas were developed in collaboration with the client.

Impact
After a brainstorm workshop with the client and several prototype tests with patients and caretakers, the final program was developed in collaboration with the producer and doctors. This program is currently being rolled out to various healthcare providers in Europe.
